Starting my blog

Well, this is my initial attempt at blogging. I thought I would start by given everyone a little background on how I got into writing and how The Modern Warlock was created.

As a background I am in my mid-50’s, married with two kids in college. My wife has worked in academia for most of her life and has written chapters for text books for years. A few years ago she partnered with her sister to publish a cookbook and I helped by doing some photography for the book.

Additionally, her sister, my SIL, has published several books and you can find some of them here. Between the two, I had plenty of motivation but the idea for my first book came in a very interesting way.

Most of my life I have had a mild case of insomnia. Most people can fall asleep in minutes if not seconds when their head hits the pillow. For me, it used to be an hour or two. But that changed thanks to writing. One night I had finished reading a chapter of a Fantasy book. It was a chapter where the villain scores a victory before ultimately being killed by the hero of the book. I wasn’t happy with the villain winning and thought about it as I put my head on the pillow. I imagined another person, a predecessor of Jason, who would come in and turned the tide. Somewhere along the line of doing this, I went to sleep. Almost record time for me. The next night I did the same thing with almost the same results. Over the next year I kept doing it with varying results. Didn’t work all of the time but has helped.

Eventually I had enough material and one day I sat down and started typing. It took me about four months to write the first draft and nearly three years (with the help of numerous people) to get it published.

My writing style is still evolving but I like this road that I am on.
